J22 Mpuma’s 2018-04 report back

Witbank yacht and Aquatic Club was again host to visiting yachties this time for the Mpumalanga J22 Championships which attracted an entry of 13 yachts. The two WYAC entries competed against visitors from Limpopo, North West Province, Gauteng, Free State, Mpumalanga and KZN over the Easter weekend, a four day event.
Friday’s racing took part in light wind conditions but a shortened course was necessary for the third race.
Saturday saw another 5 races completed after a change of course to suit the change in the wind strength.
Unfortunately the rain caused the racing to be abandoned on Sunday and the boats were sailed down the dam to support a local popular venue.
Again the weather was in charge as due to the lack of wind, the morning’s race had to be abandoned.
Despite the fact that two days’ racing was abandoned, the yachties enjoyed the hospitality at WYAC and taking part in a well organised Regatta during which friendships were renewed and new ones made.
At the prize giving on Monday the visitors took the top three places :-
1st a Transvaal Yacht Club team on ‘Usnj” sailed by Graham Baker, Sean and Barry Gurnell
2nd another of the TWC visitors team on ‘Purple Rain’ sailed by Bret Van Rooyen, Gordon and Carmen Hooper
3rd place was won by a Denysville Aquatic Club boat Alpha Rome’ sailed by Paul Thompson,
Philip Malan, and Jay d’Engle.
